Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1.Literature review - A thorough literature review on the subject was conducted with the help of a research assistant. Preparation of a review article is in progress. 2.Research team formation - A research team was formed with the collaboration of Professor K.M.S. Wimalasiri and Professor R. Chandrajith from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, and Dr. Nishantha Nanayakkara, a consultant nephrologist in the Teaching hospital, Kandy, Sri Lanka. In addition, a research student from Sri Lanka was recruited to conduct the data collection and analysis in the future. 3.Study population and location - A number of discussions were conducted with the research team via Zoom. It was decided to conduct this study in the Wilgamuwa area, which is recognized as an endemic area of CKDu in Sri Lanka. In addition, information on the total population in the area was obtained from relevant authorities, and the sampling frame was discussed. 4.Ethical review - The research protocol and questionnaires were prepared using the information gathered through literature review and discussions. The documents are to be submitted for ethical review soon.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the research plan got slightly delayed, as it was difficult to visit Sri Lanka and initiate the research project in person. In addition, there were various unexpected circumstances in Sri Lanka (current political crisis, state of emergencies, etc.) which also contributed to the delay in the study plan. However, the study is progressing at best regardless of the several unforeseen obstacles.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The documents will be submitted for ethical review in May 2022, and the data collection is planned to be started in June or July 2022. The subject recruitment is hoped to complete before September 2022. The required equipment is planned to be bought in May-June 2022. Then the follow-up of subjects will be conducted every six months. In addition, the review article and the research protocol are planned to be completed soon and published. The feasibility of the biochemical tests (types and frequency) to be conducted is still in discussion.

Causes of Carryover |
The travel costs planned for the fiscal year were not used due to travel restrictions imposed with the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to the slight delay in the research plan resulting from several unexpected circumstances, the purchase of consumables and equipment was also delayed. The next fiscal year, it is expected to use the fund to purchase consumables and equipment and publish articles.
