Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In AY2021, this JSAntu (Japan-South Africa-ntu, ntu means 'a person') project launched in December to collect data from 9 South African Bantu languages with collaboration between Japanese and South African researchers. Monographs on three Bantu languages were published at the end of AY2021. In particular, the Xitsonga monograph was the first book that organized morphosyntactic data based on tonal classification. Participating researchers gathered for an online research meeting, and weekly meetings with research assistants were held to monitor the progress of the grant. A website was also created to disseminate the progress of the grant.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The grant project is progressing as planned and during the 4 months period between December 2021 and March 2022.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In AY2022, grant activities will focus on data collection in 9 Bantu languages by closely working with four co-investigators in South Africa. Creating datasets that are comparable across languages will allow the creation of the parallel database to examine theories about prosody-syntax interface. The goal this year is collecting inter-language database, which will expand to inter-dialectal database in AY2023 onwards.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The rise of Omicron prevented international travels between December 2021 and February 2022. As such, the travel costs were left unused and will be spent during visits to South Africa in AY2022.
