Outline of Final Research Achievements |
By using in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy with a piezomanipulation system of nanotips, new types of single molecule devices using hollow and metal- and carbide-encapsulating fullerenes and carbon nanocapsules were assembled and the atomic process of the assembly was directly observed at the atomic resolution. Simultaneously, the electrical and mechanical properties corresponding to the single molecule device structures were investigated. This study was categorized into (1) the synthesis of the fullerene molecules and carbon nanocapsules, (2) the fabrication of nanometer-sized tips and nanogaps composed with the two nanotips, and (3) the assembly of single molecule devices and analysis of the properties inside the microscope. Based on the results of this study, the method that can elucidate the atomic configuration and properties of individual single molecule devices and their relationship was developed.
