Outline of Final Research Achievements

Using a number of polymorphisms o D-loop region of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) as an index of somatic mutations on mtDNA, to analyze risk of drinking and smoking for esophageal cancer, case-control study were planed. Comprehensive analysis of D-loop region of mtDNA was done to find polymorphisms.
After DNA sequencing was done for esophageal cancer patients and non-cancer controls, polymorphisms were identified. We found 7.5 polymorphisms among esophageal cancer patients and 6.8 polymorphisms among non-cancer controls on average, respectively. Mainly the difference between cancer patients and non-cancer controls was base substitution. 5.9 base substitutions were identified among esophageal cancer patients and 5.4 among non-cancer controls.
