Research Abstract

The Manusmati acknowledges that the behavior of human beings is based on the pursuit of their desire whereas it restricts their behavior by the customary law, the codified law and the Veda, all of which are the authorities established prior to individuals. Under the influence ofKumarila, the representative scholar of the Vedic exegetics (Mimiasa), the commentators of theManusmati expound the restriction of human behavior by the codified law and the restriction of the latterby the Veda in order to eliminate the social influence of heretic religions, such as Buddhism. At the same time, however, they acknowledge the possibility that the contemporary learned men may compile the law codes that will be accepted as authoritative as the Manusmati in future.
