Research Abstract |
This is a comprehensive, descriptive study of reciprocal expressions in Modern Icelandic, centering on verbs. The following are the main topics dealt with in this study: (1) lexical (inherent) reciprocal verbs (2) verbs combined with reflexive pronouns (3) reciprocal verbs with the suffix -st (4) reciprocal verbs with the prefix sam- (5) adverbials with reciprocal meaning, and (6) the reciprocal pronoun The main finding of this study is that whether the reciprocants are expressed by the subject or by the object depends on the construction itself and/or the meaning of the verb.
