Research Abstract |
A notion of the current research derives from the idea that a language affects the way we think. Psychological experiments examined speakers of English who have acquired Japanese as a second language. Results show that those who have acquired high level of Japanese proficiency obtain ‘bilingual’ way of thinking which is different from monolingual speakers. The same experiment was administered to Japanese children to see whether there are any cognitive changes through their developmental stages. It was found that cognitive changes happen at the stage of acquiring and Japanese as a first language. Then, another change happens when learning English as a second language.
