| Research Abstract |
In addition to the community-wide rice farming, many other agricultural crops are also cultivated in different areas along the Utsube River (for example tea, tomatoes and other vegetables, and mandarin oranges). By focusing on the surrounding region, the southern part of Yokkaichi City (the Suizawa, Oyamada, Utsube, and Kawarada districts), conducting field investigations of the dialects used, and analyzing the results in relation to major sociolinguistic factors (changes across administrative districts and major roads, differences in the natural environment, etc.), the goal was to uncover the richness of the vocabulary used in daily life in each district. The results of the dialect survey were used to create videos and a linguistic map, teaching materials which were then used in classes conducted at elementary schools in each of the applicable areas. A workshop was also held afterward. Also, by reporting the results of the surveys to the residents of each area, interest in the differences between their dialects was sparked, and the areas were able to share the problems they are currently faced with (such as insufficient mutual understanding between different generations), and explore possible solutions for reinvigoration the region through these dialects.
