Research Abstract

We investigated efficacy of the Electro-Convulsive Therapy (ECT) in 10 cases of schizophrenia or depression with tardive dyskinesia or dystonia and performed an objective evaluation using involuntary movement scale. ECT had significant improvement. We collected peripheral blood samples from 7 cases with depression and 9 cases with schizophrenia and measured Brain-Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF). BDNF levels increased after ECT only in depression but not in schizophrenia.
