Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to reconstruct the mixed emotions about the Meiji Restoration among the Japanese people in the past and contemporary era. It is often said that the Japanese were proud of their success of modernization, however, this survey reveals the fact that many Japanese thinkers and creators expressed ambiguous or sometimes antagonistic attitudes towards the Restoration, including Ozu Yasujiro, Naito Konan, Yamamoto Shichihei and others.
