Research Abstract |
The number of international students studying in English-speaking countries continues to increase globally / world-wide. However, many studies reveal that such opportunities are not automatically given even if learners are living in the host country. I investigated how international students living in the U.S. acquire opportunities of target language (TL)-mediated socialization with local students / people in naturalistic contexts. I longitudinally collected qualitative data from several international students / ESL speakers by informal interview and participatory observation. The main results show that the international students analyzed in this study secured opportunities of TL-mediated socialization with local students / people in different types of social space called affinity space where their various skills / knowledge is validated as trans-bordering cultural capital.
