Research Abstract |
We found that Japanese farmers still hold traditional preferences on “ie” and community, which may hinder the concentration of farmland. On the other hand, certain fraction of farmers is positive in exchanging plots to consolidate fragmented plots. Farmland Improvement Projects stimulated outsourcing of core machinery works but not purchase or rental of farmland. Based on a simulation analyses, we found that farmland fragmentation cannot be resolved through voluntary plot-exchange. However, a centralized, collective exchange can achieve nearly perfect farmland consolidation.
