Research Abstract |
This study explored how adults with intellectual disability achieve independence from their parents in Japan,Denmark and Finland. In Japan most adults with intellectual disability don`t want to be independent of their parents because of psychological pressure from their parents. Some of the parents I interviewed had their adult children leave home, others still live with them. I asked them what caused them think about their children`s independence. I also asked them how the relationship with their children is now and how the parents` role changed. The parents from the three respective countries were all asked the same questions in order for us to understand the differences or similarities between the countries.
