Research Abstract

Prairie voles are high-sociality rodents, which form strong pair bonds. In this study, the voles were evaluated to verify whether social environment modulates pain cognition. Partner-lost male voles showed higher anxiety levels in novel environment, lower threshold for mechanical stimulation-induced withdrawal reflex, and exacerbation of formalin-induced nociceptive pain as compared to partner-keep males. These results suggest that social environment can modulate pain cognition through emotional changes.
