Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The main research achievements so far have been a global systematic review of cultural ecosystem services, a cluster analysis of 1,388 parks in Tokyo and global meta-analysis of the performance of ecosystem-based adaptation measures. The review identified 16 mechanisms mediating how cultural ecosystem services from green spaces are linked to human wellbeing. This information was used to develop in-person interview surveys in parks in Tokyo. The cluster analysis identified similarities and differences between parks across size, greenness, and landscape elements. This was used to identify case study parks for in person data-collection. The meta-analysis assessed performance of different ecosystem-based approaches to coastal defenses compared to traditional engineering options.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

The NDVI analysis and cluster analysis of the 1,388 green spaces in Tokyo required many iterative steps to provide meaningful explanations for the identified patterns. This delayed slightly the selection of the case study parks, but was solved of end of FY2023.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In FY2024 it is expected that in-person surveys will take place in nine green spaces around Tokyo over 3 study periods (spring, autumn, winter). The obtained data will be analyzed through different statistical tools to identify possible changes in the linkages between cultural ecosystem services and human wellbeing, and the underlying factors mediating such changes and linkages.
