Outline of Final Research Achievements

I analyzed joint attention situations from natural Japanese, Chinese, English, and Brazilian Portuguese conversations, to examine the way that the multiple alternative forms and syntactic categories universally attributable to demonstratives contribute to the establishment of joint attention. In all languages, speakers estimated the addressee’s attention level toward the referent and switched among forms among demonstratives to adjust the amount of deictic information provided about the referent. Furthermore, speakers of different languages showed different tendencies in choosing forms while establishing joint attention based on whether their language employs demonstratives or anaphora following the establishment of joint attention. Also, while switching of forms also occurred in human-dog joint attention situations, important differences with human-human interactions were observed, including the lack of switching of qualitative and syntactic features, and the absence of anaphora.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究では、自然会話データを用い「なぜ指示詞は言語普遍的に複数の代替形と統語範疇を持つのか」という問いについて考察した。分析において用いた、周囲の事物に互いの視覚的共同注意の焦点を誘導する場面（共同注意場面）は、人のコミュニケーションの始原的な場面だと考えられる。本研究では、4言語の会話データをもとに、このような始原的な場面で人が互いの注意の焦点を効率的に調整するために、指示詞の体系性が必要とされていることを明らかにした。さらに、人が主導する犬との共同注意場面をも分析することで、人の言語を解さない犬に対する注意調整場面では、指示詞は用いられるものの、上述の体系性の一部が不要であることも示した。
