Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The infiltration behaviors of salt solutions in the compacted bentonite are being studied, which help to understand the ions diffusion process in the buffer material for the high level radioactive waste disposal. In this study, NaCl and KCl solutions with 5 concentrations was used to infultrate into the compacted bentonite with different compaction dry density for 24 hours. It was found that as the increase in the concentration of the solution, as expected more cations idiffuse into the bentonite specimen. It was also found that the cation concentration in the pore water is not the same as that supplied outside.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
It was initially planned to tested on 2 types of bentonite with 7 different solutions in 2022 FY, however, salt solution infiltration takes much longer time than initially expected, and sometimes erode the testing apparatus easily. Additional tests were also conducted to confirm the methodology of concentration measurements. Nevertheless, the testing method and characteristics were generally clarified now and the plan is expected to prograss smoothly in the following years.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the following 2 years, more bentonite and solutions will be used to test the effect of types of ion and benonites. For soulutions, CaCl2. MaCl2 and NaHCO3 will be used on the bentonites MX-80, Kunibond, VolCaly. More sets of testing apparatuses will be prepared to accelerate the study prograss.
