Outline of Final Research Achievements

In the present study, we attempted to elucidate the neural mechanisms associated with the comparison of information from sensory feedback with future motor intentions. Objects requiring different grasping actions were prepared and presented as priming stimuli for very short periods of time (0 ms, 5 ms, 7 ms, 20 ms, 50 ms). The object to be grasped was set up in sessions that always matched the priming stimulus and in sessions with mixed mismatch. In both the match and mismatch conditions, the subliminal priming stimuli produced similar movement durations to the conscious stimuli. In the mismatch condition, some monkeys changed their strategy, biasing one object against the other. In the present study, only behavioural experiments measuring movement time were conducted because of the time required to train the monkeys and the sudden death of the monkeys.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

運動の企図などのprospectiveな情報は、前頭前野で符号化されていると考えられるが、運動の意図と実際の運動の結果の比較の具体的な神経機構が明らかではない。ヒトでは、prospectiveな情報の処理が運動主体感を促進することが明らかになっており、頭頂葉と前頭前野がそれに関わることを示されている。今回の結果は、サルでもprospectiveな情報によって意識下でも運動の計画ができることを示した。今後は神経活動の記録を目指す。身体意識、あるいは脳内での自他区別の神経機構の解明にも糸口となる。また、リハビリテーションやスポーツ、芸術のための新たなトレーニング法の開発に応用されると考えられる。
