Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study, the relationship between Murakami Haruki’s works and Japanese cinema was traced through the analysis of adaptation works. At the end of the 1970s, Murakami emerged as a writer with a significantly different style from existing Japanese literature. His works thus came to symbolize novelty for a new generation of film directors from the post-studio era of Japanese cinema. Subsequently, as Murakami’s novels began to circulate globally in the 2000s, the adaptation of his works expanded into the context of global art cinema. This study revealed that Murakami’s works have been recontextualized in various societal contexts without being confined to the framework of “Japanese cinema” or “Japanese culture.”

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
