Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the reporting period, I secured ethical approval from the University of Toyama’s HREC. Following HREC approval, I secured participation of one Japan-based participant and held an initial author interview with them November 2022. I also secured the necessary equipment for research analysis and dissemination in addition to secure data storage. I attended and presented at an international conference in Vietnam held at Ton Duc Thang University. During my conference visit I also met with two research participants for interviews about their experiences of writing for publication in Vietnam. I also arranged for the employment of a Special Research Assistant from April 1, 2023 to assist with data entry of the necessary publication data for later analysis. One manuscript related to this investigation has been sent to and returned from peer review and was subsequently revised and resubmitted for a second round of peer review that remained pending as of the end of FY2023. I arranged to use the teaching buyout system from FY2023 to secure one full working day per week to dedicate to this research project.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The University of Toyama’s HREC required all documents to be presented in Japanese, which caused the approval process to take more than 6 months, delaying the start of data collection. The University of Toyama only allows for employing its graduate students as RAs. Since I don’t teach any graduate students, arranging for an RA to assist with data entry proved extremely difficult and time-consuming. I was only able to secure a Special Research Assistant to start part-time from FY2023. Related to this, I received initially poor guidance from my support office about how to go about hiring an RA that took several months to resolve.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In FY2023, together with my newly hired Special Research Assistant, I hope to complete data entry of the publication data available and begin to disseminate initial findings. I hope the ongoing review of one manuscript will finish successfully and result in an initial publication related to this research project. I will recruit two more participants into the research and begin analyzing the data they provide. I will continue data collection and analysis with my current research participant and consider dissemination options as analysis progresses.

Causes of Carryover |
The University of Toyama only allows for employing its graduate students as RAs. Since I don’t teach any graduate students, arranging for an RA to assist with data entry proved extremely difficult and time-consuming. As a result, I was only able to secure a Special Research Assistant to start part-time from FY2023, despite having planned to employ them from the start of FY2022 in my initial research plan. Related to this, I received initially poor guidance from my support office about how to go about hiring an RA that took several months to resolve. Further, the international conference I attended was in Vietnam, which was a country that was cheaper to travel to than the country I had planned to travel to in my initial proposal. These remaining funds will be used for employing a Special Research Assistant and international conference travel in FY2023.
