Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The research has progressed as planned so far and I have been able to conclude the first round of data collection both from students participating in virtual exchange and students studying abroad in English-speaking countries. The preliminary analysis of the data has resulted in a number of presentations given both in Japan and overseas (CAN-ASIA conference in Kyoto and ICOP-L2 conference in Barcelona). An article titled "Demonstrating active listenership through collaborative turn completion to display epistemic access in multi-party interactions" has also been published in the Journal of Linguistics and Education. A second article is also being written at the moment and two proposals have been submitted to attend other international conferences to present the results of the research.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research has progressed smoothly so far. The first round of data collection is completed and more data is planned to be collected in the present academic year. Collecting data from students studying abroad proved to be more challenging than initially planned due to time zone differences and unavailability of the research participants to attend Zoom meetings. However, the amount of data collected in this first phase has been sufficient for analytic work and the generation of some output.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Currently, I am further analyzing the data already collected and plan to get the research results published in academic journals. Meanwhile, the second round of data collection will soon be initiated with data collected from students learning English in Japan both in regular classes and classes utilizing virtual exchange, as well as from students studying abroad. I am also planning to attend a number of workshops to sharpen my analytical skills during this academic year.

Causes of Carryover

Due to limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of plans concerning international travels for attending workshops and conferences were canceled and thus an amount of the funding was unused. Also, the widespread use of Zoom and online communication tools made the purchase of some audio and visual recording tools unnecessary.
I plan to spend the budget carried forward on attending international workshops, training programs and conferences now that international mobility has become possible once again.
