Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The research has made good progress this year as the second round of data collection was concluded and the analysis of this data made it possible to compare the development of interactional competence in students studying abroad and those participating in virtual exchange and taking regular language classes in Japan. The findings suggests that participants studying abroad performed alignment activities earlier than their peers in the other two groups. These participants were able to produce locally contingent turns and demonstrate their active listenership by displaying their understanding of the previous turns and orienting to them. They were also able to manage the emerging topics in their interactions and expand them to sustain the flow of the conversation.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research has made smooth progress so far as two rounds of data collection have been concluded resulting in several outputs. However, the transcription of the data collected proved more time consuming than initially estimated. In conversation analytic research, an accurate transcription of spoken interactions is crucial as it can greatly impact the results of the research. As more data will be collected in the coming year and more transcriptions will be due, I will be spending more time working on my data.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the coming academic year, along with working on the already collected data and concluding their transcription and analysis, I am intending to start the third round of data collection both from students studying abroad and those taking part in virtual exchange. What I hope to achieve mainly is to diversify the data in this round of collection. As both study abroad programs and virtual exchanges take different forms, I need to collect data from various programs as such to be able to achieve some generalizability in the findings. This may prove challenging but I am currently exploring my options.

Causes of Carryover |
I was going to purchase a book with the remaining budget, but since the book was published in the 2024 fiscal year, I decided to postpone the purchase. The amount will be used for the purchase of the book title in 2024.
