Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I was able to conduct archival research as planned, including archives at the University of Maryland College Park, the Library of Congress, and the University at Albany.
Research at these archives helped me reorient my research topic.I discovered that I cannot write one global history of these two distinct icons, and that it is better to separate them as two different projects. This was not only because the portrait and the rescript had different jurisdictions and legal status; but it was also because people in Japan and outside (including US occupiers) saw the portrait akin to the US flag, something whose physical presence mattered. The rescript, on the other hand, was considered important for what it says, not for what it was. Concrete result of my discovery/research are listed below.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
As opposed to my initial plan to study the portrait and the rescript together, I found it better to separate them. This was a big change I did not expect, but actually it opened new perspectives and made me more productive. So I judge the progress of my research smooth.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I will continue my analysis of the materials collected so far, and will make trips to archives as needed.

Causes of Carryover |
2023年3月におこなったボストンでの資料調査での結果が予想よりよかったため、当初予定していた出張の総数が減ったため。ただし研究書刊を目指すための専門家への謝金の必要が生じたため、当該助成金を使用する計画である。
