Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study attempted to clarify the characteristics of Agile, one of the software development methodologies, and how it is structured and conceptualized. Agile is characterized by repeating development cycles from two weeks to one month in small, short cycles to obtain customer feedback, test hypotheses, learn, and improve. Quantitative research and analysis revealed the importance of psychological safety and organizational culture that allows for failure as a precondition for such iterative activities. In addition, it was confirmed that agile self-organized teams cannot be self-organized simply by structuring members and transferring authority, but require organizational support according to the maturity level of the team's self-organization.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

日本のソフトウェア開発では、これまで計画駆動型で手戻りをしないことを前提に要件や仕様を決めるウォーターフォールが主流であったが、変化が激しく顧客の要望も多様化した現代では対応し難くなり、漸進的で変化に対応したアジャイルが求められつつあり、変化に対応する前提として心理的な安全性や組織文化が重要であることを示すことができたことが社会的意義といえる。また、これまでアジャイルに関する研究は、その技術的な特性から効率性の追求などソフトウェア工学やそれに類するものであり、チームの特性や開発プロセスの問題など組織的な観点からの研究は少なく、その組織的な点から明らかにした点が本研究の学術的貢献といえる。
