Outline of Final Research Achievements

In examining the emerging newspapers in the Kansai region during the Occupation Period, I focused on Hisakichi Maeda, the founder of the Sankei Shimbun, and published a monograph entitled "Hisakichi Maeda, The Osaka Man Who Built the Sankei Shimbun and Tokyo Tower"(Sogensha, 2023). I also focused on Tomisaburo Hashimoto as a politician from the Asahi Shimbun,and analyzed how his experiences in politics and the media, especially in the early Showa period, influenced him as a postwar politician in his monograph "Hashimoto Tomisaburo no Kyodo" (Sogensha, 2024).

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

前田という人物を単に産経新聞の創業者という角度からのみとらえるのではなく、東京タワーの創設者として論じる中で、都市論における「テクスト論／メディア論」の二分法と新聞論における「ジャーナリズム論／メディア論」の二分法を重ね合わせる視点を提示し、その上で前田を「メディア論」的人間として位置づけた。また橋本登美三郎を論じる中で、昭和戦前期の大衆新聞が速報を可能にするテクノロジーや広範囲の読者を獲得できる規模の経済を手にした結果、たとえばポール・ヴィリリオのいう「速度」にとりつかれたことが20世紀メディア社会を特徴付け、同時に橋本の「転向」をも促した、と論じた。
