Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Competing interactions---or frustration---between the constituents of a many-body system have proven to be an origin of exotic phases of matter. A famous example in this context are quantum spin liquids (QSL), that do not exhibit conventional magnetic order of spin-dipolar moments, but rather are defined by emergent gauge fields, fractionalized excitations, and topological order. On the other hand, ordering of higher moments like spin-quadrupoles may occur as well. Unlike spin-dipolar order, spin-quadrupolar order is defined by a director---an arrow without a head---in close analogy to the rods of nematic order and liquid crystals. Thus, spin-quadrupolar order is also named quantum spin nematic (QSN). Within this fiscal year, we have mostly tried to address the nature of the incommensurate mode occurring within the QSN phase of the J1K model. A manuscript is now in preparation. Our Kitaev-magnet related work obtaining a proximate Tomonaga Luttinger liquid with bond-quadrupoles similar to the QSN has been accepted for publication and is currently in the production process [Preprint available under arXiv:2212.11000]. A second manuscript is in preparation containing more details about other phases occurring in the corresponding model. Here, no additional calculations and computations are planned.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
The research has been delayed for private reasons.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We are now preparing the manuscript for submission. At this point there are only a few minor questions that we may try to address before proceeding with the preparation and submission.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Due to private reasons (see remarks below), the research progressed slower than anticipated and I attended fewer conferences/workshops resulting in less expenditure. The remaining budget will be used for covering publication charges and travel costs for attending conferences/workshops.
