Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This research developed two innovative types of damped pin joints designed for building structures where the formation of plastic hinges is expected. Unlike traditional plastic hinges in main structural members, these damped pin joints offer the advantage of easy repair by simply replacing the dampers, thereby enhancing the resilience of building structures suffering from natural disasters.
One of the proposed joints utilizes lever arms and round steel bar dampers. The dampers are vertically installed within the space of columns and connected to the beam end via lever arms, allowing for flexible damper arrangements despite limited space at the beam ends. The other proposal incorporates double-stage yield buckling-restrained dampers at the joint, comprising regular buckling-restrained steel bar dampers and dampers with gap arranged in parallel.
The research includes theoretical analysis of the mechanical properties of the proposed joints, followed by cyclic loading tests conducted on specimens with various parameters. The test results demonstrated stable hysteresis performance and desired yield characteristics in the proposed joints. Additionally, numerical analysis models were developed to simulate the hysteretic behavior of the joints, with comparison against the test results to verify accuracy. Finally, seismic analyses were performed on steel frame structures with varying numbers of stories, revealing that the proposed joints effectively reduce the structural responses.
