2022 Fiscal Year Research-status Report

Mechanism of malaria-induced disruption of hematopoietic stem cell niche in the bone marrow

Research Project

Project/Area Number 22K15448
Research InstitutionThe University of Tokyo

Principal Investigator

Project Period (FY) 2022-04-01 – 2024-03-31
Keywordsbone marrow / hematopoietic niche / malaria
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We recently found that the some bone marrow niches are disrupted by malaria, which results in the alteration of bone marrow hematopoiesis and suppression of lymphopoiesis. Therefore we further aim to elucidate the mechanisms causing the alteration of certain niches in the bone marrow during blood stage Plasmodium infection. We examined the differential gene expressions of specific bone marrow cell population sorted by flow cytometry. Using genetically modified mice, we are now elucidating the role of some genes in the bone marrow during malaria.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Experiments were progressing rather smoothly as expected.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Next we plan to identify the host and parasites factors that contribute to the alteration of bone marrow niche. Furthermore, we are also evaluating the long term effects of such alteration in the bone marrow on the host immune responses.

Causes of Carryover

The remaining amount will be used for purchasing research reagents.
