Outline of Final Research Achievements

Pediatric acute otitis media/sinusitis remains an important infectious disease in children even after the introduction of routine vaccination against the main causative bacteria. Although treatment and prevention strategies have changed due to the creation of guidelines for the use of antibiotics and the systematic introduction of vaccines, there are still many cases where the disease is recurrent or difficult to treat. This time, we conducted a molecular biological investigation from two major perspectives:the impact of viral infection on bacterial infection and the impact on host cells. We mainly examined the effects of respiratory infection viruses infecting the upper respiratory tract. We cultured children's adenoid epithelial cells,infected them with respiratory syncytial virus, rhinovirus (HRV), and parainfluenza virus (PIV). RNA sequence analysis was performed after infection with virus, rhinovirus (HRV), and parainfluenza virus (PIV).

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

子供における感染症がどのように生じるのかを詳しく、科学的に解明することは、有効な治療法を開発するために不可欠です。幼少期に感染する感染症のほとんどがウイルス性感染症であり、ほぼ全ての幼児が感染しますが、何度も感染したり、治療に難渋する幼児もおり、感染後の病態に個人差がかかわることも知られていますが、その原因は不明です。ウイルスとヒト細胞の間にどのような関係があるのかについて手術によって得られた組織から作成した細胞を用いてウイルス感染後の反応をRNAsequenceという解析技術を用いて解析しました。本研究では、感染からその後に生じる炎症反応がウイルスによってどのように異なるかを解明しました。
