Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In FY 2023, studies were conducted in Africa applying our developed toolkit. With the decline of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, our interest shifted towards investigating additional endemic viruses, including hepatitis B virus, Monkeypox virus, and other viruses potentially transmitted from mother to child. Overall, 1077 individuals, comprising 200 pregnant women and 200 newborns, participated in surveys conducted in rural populations of the DRC. However, challenges arose in deploying our virus sequencing toolkit directly in the field, primarily due to the complexities of safely delivering sequencing kits in specific storage conditions. Therefore, we decided to collect and transport samples to Japan for analysis using the toolkit, albeit resulting in prolonged wait times for sample transfer.
