Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research aimed to clarify how naval port cities in East Asia have been transformed into tourist destinations in the context of the disconnection and continuity of war memories. From field research in three military port cities - Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture; Kaohsiung, Taiwan; and Jinhae (now Changwon), South Korea - various social and political factors such as post-war nationalism, geopolitical factors and, more recently, tourism policies due to the declining birthrate and ageing population, are at play with the succession of national and local war memories, the research clarified that each region has undergone a unique transformation into a tourist destination. It also became clear that popular culture plays an important role in this process.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
