Outline of Final Research Achievements

This project examined the decisions of the International Court of Justice from the perspective of international politics, using three social science approaches known as scientific methods: quantitative textual analysis, network analysis and online survey experiments. The survey experiment was unique in that it was conducted in two different societies/nations, Japan and China. This meant that, as the traditional Western-centred international order was shaken, we could cross the border to see what role international law could play from the standpoint of political science.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本プロジェクトの意義は、国際法と国際政治をつなぐ、実証研究を三つの方法論で展開したことにある。挑戦的研究の目標に照らして、探索的ではあるが有効な方法を見出すうえで多くの知見を得て、また、２年間という短い期間においてワーキングペーパーも複数作成することができ、一定の成果が出た。
判決が先例を重視していることは既知であるが、それが量的テキスト分析によって可視化されたことは社会科学におけるデータサイエンス応用事例としてとらえることができ、それも意義として理解できるだろう。
