Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Most of the sexually reproducing organisms tend to have a 1:1 sex ratio, but in arthropods, symbiotic bacteria can sometimes skew the sex ratio toward females. In the lacewing Mallada desjardinsi, a strongly female-biased sex ratio induced by Spiroplasma was converted to a normal 1:1 sex ratio by fixation of a suppressor gene. Subsequently, a “hyper” strain of Spiroplasma was discovered that induces male killing regardless of the presence of suppressors, but whose frequency remains low in each population. In the Fukuyama population, the infection frequency of Spiroplasma decreased continuously each year. Genome analysis showed that the hyper strains are derived from the original strains of Spiroplasma. We also revealed the genetic structure of M. desjardinsi, including a selective sweep of the cytoplasm, probably due to Wolbachia-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
