Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Currently, there is no effective treatment for Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. In this study, we explored a new method for producing lung progenitor cells, which serve as the precursors to various functional epithelial cells in the lungs. As a result, we found that neonatal skin fibroblasts are unsuitable as material for lung progenitor cells, and it is preferable to exclude BIRB796 from the maintenance medium for lung progenitor cells. Furthermore, we confirmed that the produced lung progenitor cells, although weak, possess a certain degree of differentiation ability.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
肺気腫や慢性気管支炎などの慢性閉塞性肺疾患は、タバコの煙などの有害物質を長期間吸入することによって発症する肺の炎症性疾患であり、毎年世界で300万人以上がこの病で命を落としている。現在のところ、上述の肺疾患に対する有効な治療法は存在しない。本研究では、様々な肺の機能性上皮細胞の元となる肺の前駆細胞を作り出す新たな技術を開発中であり、今後再生困難な肺組織を作り出す技術への応用が期待できる。
