Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is to clarify the historical significance of the musical activities of German POWs interned in Japan from Qingdao (Tsingtau,German leased land in China) during World War I. After two years of research, the following points became clear. (1) During the approximately five years of internment, the attitude of the Japanese military toward the music and cultural activities of POWs changed from being a regulated subject to being an integral part of the camp management. (2) The POWs' musical activities were not directly inherited from the musical practices of the military bands of the Qingdao period, but reflected the concert culture of 19th century Germany. (3) Toward the end of the internment period, theatrical performances incorporating music were held at Nagoya Camp.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
