Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research project aimed to reexamine how "modality" as a terminology of Kant should be understood. For his conception of it seems to straddle three distinct disciplinary areas; epistemology, metaphysics, and logic. And this could be a source of dangerous ambiguity. In this study, it was shown that the existence of the object is a modal actuality in Kant (merging logic and metaphysics), and that the actuality of cognition is discussed in terms of the theory of the holding-to-be-true (merging epistemology and logic). It was then clarified that the possibility of bridging these three fields is the peculiarity of Kant's critical philosophy.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の学術的意義は、今日の哲学からカント哲学を振り返ったときに見出されうる可能な曖昧性に解決の糸口を見出したことであった。カント哲学は現代でも影響力を持つが、18世紀の思想であるという時代的な制約を負っている。そのため、カントが知りえなかったような概念区分というものも今日では存在しており、そのような一見した曖昧性がカント哲学の魅力を低下させる一因となっているのである。このような現状を踏まえて、本研究では現代の様相形而上学や現代認識論の議論を援用してカントの概念使用を明確化しる解釈を提示することを試みた。このような成果は西洋哲学の古典を正当に評価するための学術的・社会的意義をもつであろう。
