Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research aimed to reveal the details and development of Whitehead's philosophical method, called "speculative philosophy", by investigating its relevance to the philosophy of science in the 19th and 20th centuries. Specifically, I revealed that Whitehead, with critical reference to C. D. Broad's claim, defined his speculative philosophy as a method for constructing transdisciplinary hypotheses that can cultivate our imagination. I also showed the possible influence of Whewell's view of hypothesis on Whitehead through C. Darwin. In addition, I clarified the intellectual situation to which Whitehead belongs by examining the debate between realism and idealism in the 20th century.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
