Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research is a basic study to correct the Haikai history centered on“Basho's Haiku style”and to construct a history of“Haikai as a way of life”that supports human life. The concrete results of this research include: collecting and compiling a database of all of Izen's Hokku and Renku that are currently available, and making it available on the internet; clarifying the characteristics of overseas Haikai and Haiku studies and their significance in the analysis of Haikai and Haiku works; and clarifying the importance of the study of works focusing on the 'Way of life' expressed by Izen and Basho as 'Kostujiki(mendicant' spirit),' 'Hinraku(enjoy poverty),' 'Karumi(light heart)' and 'Muhunbestu(unfettered mind)'.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の成果の学術的・社会的意義は、①惟然の作品を誰でもアクセスできる形で公開したこと、②惟然の作品が彼の生き方の思想（「軽み」「無分別」「乞食」「貧楽」）を多分に反映したものであり、その点に芭蕉から近現代俳句までを繋ぐ文学史的意義、人間が生きる上での俳諧の本質的意義が存することを示したことにある。すなわち本研究の成果は、従来の「俳風」至上主義の俳諧史を「生き方としての俳諧」という視点から再構築する基礎となるものであり、俳諧作品の本質的価値、現代的意義の解明に対しても重要な意義を有するものである。
