Outline of Final Research Achievements

What is the role of literature in the 'culture of remembrance,' an effort to connect Nazi memory and reflection to future generations? This study focuses on literature that deals with the Nazi euthanasia policy for the disabled, 'Aktion T4,' and examines the value of literature as fiction in its ability to depict the perspectives of both the perpetrators and the victims. This study analyzes the representation of doctors as perpetrators in Morio Kita's 'In the Corner of Night and Fog' and the disparities and discriminatory structures surrounding disability in Bernhard Schlink's 'The Reader', in addition to examining German children's literature such as 'Anton' and 'Hugo'.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまではナチスの犯罪を描く際に生存者の「証言」が重視されてきたが、被害者の視点からしか描けないノンフィクションには加害者の視点が排除されるという限界がある。フィクションは加害者にも焦点をあてることで、加害者の悪魔化を防ぐ点に意義があることを明らかにした。それによって「想起の文化」におけるフィクションの肯定的役割を提示したことに本研究の学術的意義がある。また、現在ナチスの記憶が次第に遠いものになっていくなか、ウクライナやガザ地区では新たな戦争の記憶が生成されている。このような状況下で「想起の文化」の新たなあり方を問うことは重要な意味を持っている。
