Outline of Final Research Achievements

This project has examined only official records and published pamphlets in addition to unpublished manuscripts and private papers in archives at Washington DC, the United States, Oxford and London, the United Kingdom and Geneva, Switzerland.
As for outputs, my article titled ‘Unreal States and the Folly of People: Human Security and G. L. Dickinson’s Public Education for Reforming International Relations’ has been published by International History Review. I also presented a paper at International Studies Association 2023 Annual Convention, in addition to various seminars and conferences in Japan, Canada and the United States. I will also present a paper at the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations 2024 Conference.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究は、国際関係における民主主義のアイデアについて国際関係史および思想史の文脈から分析を試みたものである。1920年の国際連盟の創設によって、国際社会ではじめて民主主義が普遍的価値として支持されるようになった。しかしこれまでの関連する先行研究の多くは、民主主義という概念が国際連盟でどのように議論・理解されてきたかについて明らかにしてこなかった。本研究は、様々な一次史料を用いて、民主主義の概念がどのような概念と想起され、同時に国際政治において利用されたのかについて、歴史学的に説明を試みたものである。
