Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research examines archival materials (broadcast recordings and scripts) in both Japan and the United States to find out why the voices of the public were recorded and broadcast on the radio in the two countries, and what exactly those voices were talking about. In contrast to the announcements made by the Imperial Headquarters during the World War II, the Japanese radio began actively broadcasting the voices of the public during the occupation period, while imitating the American radio and claiming the importance of "opening the microphone." This research has revealed that this democratization reform called "maiku no kaiho" may continue to have an impact on today's Japanese broadcasting and even on postwar Japan's pro-American democratization.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究課題により、私たちが今日触れる現代メディアも取り上げている街の声が、アメリカでは第二次世界大戦前からラジオで放送されていたこと、そして、その番組制作のあり方が終戦後占領軍により持ち込まれ、日本を民主的かつ親米にする一助を担っていたことを明らかにした。日米における「マイクの開放」の連続に注目し、大戦前後の期間を長く捉える「日米放送貫戦史」という観点にもとづき、いかなる人々の声が放送から排除され、あるいは取り入れられたのか、過去の実態を把握することで、メディアで取捨選択された声が私たちの意識にいかに影響を及ぼしてきているか、今日の問題を歴史的に、より深く考察できるという意義が認められる。
