Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study reexamined the movement and influence of Ryoko Nakayoshi, known as the earliest advocate for the return of Okinawa in Japan. Previously, Nakayoshi's movement for Okinawa's return was considered to lack consistency in political stance and to have little influence. However, utilizing U.S. declassified documents, this study revealed that the US government strongly cautioned against Nakayoshi's internationally oriented reversion movement, fearing that the international community might perceive US control of Okinawa as colonial rule, which became a significant factor leading to the return of Okinawa. Furthermore, this study demonstrated that Nakayoshi's advocacy for the return consistently aligned with international norms, asserting that US control of Okinawa violated principles of self-determination and non-expansion of territory.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の学術的意義は、仲吉の復帰運動を再評価し、その復帰運動の意義を示した点にある。また、仲吉を再評価する過程で、米国政府は沖縄返還問題が植民地問題として国際社会から取り上げられることを強く恐れていたことを示した。この点は、沖縄返還研究で注目を集め始めたばかりであり、沖縄返還研究の萌芽的テーマを発展させることができた。また、社会的意義として、現在、沖縄の米軍基地問題は国連機関で取り上げられており、国際社会のなかで沖縄の基地問題を把握することが求められている。本研究は、沖縄返還問題を国際社会との関わりから論じることで、現代の問題を考えるにあたっての基盤となる歴史的知見を提供できたと考える。
