Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this research project, I investigated the economic structure of ethnonational politics in Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly from the perspective of patronage politics. During the period, I visited Bosnia twice and conducted interviews with ministers, public officers, and company managers both in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska. Combining the interview data with the archival research on local newspapers and statistical analyses, I am submitting a research article to an international peer-reviewed journal. I also have a plan for research presentations at Japanese and international conferences.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

現代政治において「民族」はときに急進的な動員力を発揮し、紛争や暴動、分離独立運動、極右政党の台頭など、様々な社会不安を引き起こす要因となりうる。従来、これら民族的な政治行動の原動力は人々が持つ民族アイデンティティに起因するものと考えられてきた。これに対して本研究では、パトロネージ政治、すなわち公的資源の分配（例えば役所での職業機会の斡旋、予算の分配、行政サービスの提供等）を引き換えにした選挙で支持調達の分析を通して、民族主義政治の物質的な側面を明らかにすることに本研究の意義がある。これら研究が進めば、民族紛争を解決する平和構築の政策を政治経済学の観点から検証することが可能である。
