Outline of Annual Research Achievements

This study aims to examine the impact of retirement on health and behavior in Japan. Specifically, the impact of retirement on gambling behaviors was examined. Using an instrumental variable approach, this study showed that 1) retirement decreased the probability of gambling extensively. 2) No observable effect was showed on intensive margins. 3) And, the impact was driven largely by men and educated population. Overall, the retirement has been shown to have a significant beneficial effect on population health in Japan. Finally, the effect seems to be heterogenous across different subpopulations, such as men and educated populations.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

4: Progress in research has been delayed.

Reason

There were unexpected situation, such as health and other factors, that significantly delayed this project. Also, new projects from other grants also somewhat delayed this progress of this project.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

I plan to further conduct additional analyses on dataset and try to obtain more data for more refined tests on the subject. In addition, I am considering extending the analyses to other potential health indicators.

Causes of Carryover

For next fiscal year, the plan is used to the funding to purchase for equipment, conference fees, journal submission fees, or other potential fees incurred. In addition, the funding may be used to purchase the statistical software or used to maintain the license for update depending on circumstances. Finally, the funding may be used to purchase other perishable goods, such as paper and pens.
