Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In Japan, there is large gender inequality in housework. Recent research has proposed the “housework skills hypothesis,” which states that men’s lack of “housework skills” prevents them from participating in housework. This study focused on co-education of home economics as a way to acquire housework skills, and analyzed the Japanese time use survey (Survey on time and leisure activities). Findings show that even if men acquired housework skills through co-education in home economics, their time spent doing housework did not increase. It was also revealed that there is a gender difference in time spent doing housework by unmarried persons, which begins to emerge from the late 20s onwards. These results indicate the need to consider why unmarried women come to do more housework than men.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
