Outline of Final Research Achievements

I conducted a basic research on the Japanese language textbooks for secondary education edited by HAGA Yaichi. I created a database of the 16 textbooks I researched and collected, focusing on their table of contents, in order to discover the characteristics of the way teaching materials were selected. In addition, in order to examine the collected textbooks in relation to HAGA's theories on classical education and national education, I obtained books related to HAGA Yaichi and books on the history of education, which I used in my study. Through comprehensive research into the Japanese language textbooks for secondary education edited by HAGA, the differences in editorial policy before and after the survey of European and US textbooks and the changes in the positioning of classical education and national education gradually emerged.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

芳賀矢一の仕事と国語科教育界との関わりのうち、中等教育の国語教科書に関しては、研究が進んでいない。また、そもそも国語教科書の歴史研究は、初等教育に比べ中等教育の研究が大幅に立ち遅れている。本研究はそれらの進展に資するものである。
