Icy Origins of Organic Molecules Unveiled by JWST

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The research focuses on analyzing the data taken by the CORINOS JWST program, especially the ice features and outflow morphology of these protostars. One project analyzes the absorption features of icy complex organic molecules (COMs) in IRAS 15398-3359, one of the four sources in the CORINOS JWST program. Composite absorption features at 7-9 um are detected toward this protostar, which can be attributed to icy COMs. Extensive iterations of modeling were carried out to not only fit the observed absorption features but also characterize the significance of the fitted species combinations. The work in process strongly suggests detection of icy COMs; however, its significance has not been robustly determined. Another project supported by this KAKENHI program is the analysis of CO2 ice features in four protostars. CO2 ice features at 15 um are detected in all four sources surveyed by the CORINOS JWST program. Interestingly, the protostars with higher CO2 ice column densities are the ones with abundant gas-phase COMs. Pure CO2 ice features are identified from its iconic double-peaked feature. Detection of pure CO2 ices suggests past heating likely due to accretion bursts. This KAKENHI program also supports the radiative transfer modeling of the four sources targeted by the CORINOS program as well as the comparison of outflow structures seen in infrared and sub-millimeter wavelengths.
