Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Experimental investigations of wrapping angle combinations were conducted on flat-sided beams, the addition of wrapping material as flat angle-ply reinforcements on the sides significantly enhanced the performance of flatwise loaded LVL beams, approaching the performance of solid wood and edgewise loaded LVL beams. The reinforcing effect was manifested in an enhancement of the bending performance and stiffness of the core material. This simplified application of incorporating a multi-directional assembly of fibers provides an enhancement in the structural integrity and economical utilization of wood veneers within engineered timber products.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The development of wrapping in curved foramtions was technically challenging.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The application of continuous wrapping of single stripes in multiple layers on curved beams proved to be technically challenging. Consequently, a simplified application of form-specific sheets of veneer processed with laser cutting is being sought in order to deliver the desired wrapping effect in terms of grain direction and wrapping/clamping performance. Moreover, an investigation is currently underway into the potential application of ring-shaped veneer hoops as a joining sleeve for the inclusion of applied LVL sections during glue-ups.

Causes of Carryover |
Due to delays in the development stage, the grant was extended for the 2024 fiscal year on 15/03/2024, hence, the expenditure of funds for the purchase of experimental materials and jigs is to be incurred in the following fiscal year.
