Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research aimed to investigate how normal epithelial cells detect and eliminate newly emerging cancer cells. The analysis revealed that normal epithelial cells recognize cancer cells by sensing their distinct mechanical properties, such as size and plasma membrane tension. Besides, we could successfully identify novel factors that regulate this cancer defense system.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまでの研究から、正常上皮細胞ががん細胞の出現を感知し、上皮組織から押し出す形で排除するという現象が知られている。このがん防御機構において、正常細胞はどのようにがん細胞の出現を感知しているのか、さらに、その結果正常細胞でどのような変化が起こりがん細胞の排除につながるのかという詳細な機構は不明瞭であった。本研究は、このがん細胞排除機構において、がん細胞特有の機械的性質が感知に重要であることを示すことで、この経路において重要な課題であったがん細胞認識機構の一端を示すことができた。今回得られた知見は新たながん細胞検知手法の開発などにもつながると期待される。
