Outline of Final Research Achievements |
During the development of the mammalian oocytes, approximately two-thirds of all oocytes are lost through cell death at certain times during fetal development. Why is large-scale cell death of oocytes induced? This study aims to elucidate the mechanisms that determine the fate of life and death and to explore the physiological significance of this process. Using an in vitro induction system of female germ cells from pluripotent stem cells, we established a live-cell imaging system to observe the sequence of events leading to oocyte cell death, and observed the relationship between cell death and the dynamics of intracellular organelles.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
